Visakha Coffee Utsav 2004
Coffee Board organized the Visakha Coffee Utsav at Vishakapatnam from 1st to 3rd February 2004, which was a great success.
The Utsav provided an ideal forum to showcase the tribal coffees grown in the picturesque Eastern Ghats of Northern Andhra Pradesh and Southern Orissa popularly known as non-traditional areas. The region is predominantly inhabited by tribal groups and is known for their primitive agriculture practices and 'Podu' (shifting cultivation) over centuries.
The introduction of coffee as a perennial crop in the Podu lands had helped in transforming the lives of the tribals in many ways. The change is visible in the process of restoring the environmental balance, increased awareness level in selecting the major and intercrops, use of organic inputs, improved processing facilities and marketing of produce and organising people's institutions for negotiating from position of strength.
In a nutshell, the coffee cultivation activity in non-traditional areas has fulfilled the twin objectives of socio economic uplifment of tribals and conservation of the environment by providing sustainable alternative to the practice of 'Podu' cultivation. Andhra Pradesh and Orissa have now emerged as newly developed coffee regions in the coffee map of the country.
