Finals & Awards Nite

After the grueling preliminary rounds and the semi-finals on the 22nd and 23rd January 2004 at the Garden side Hall of Hotel Taj Gateway, Bangalore, the action shifted to 9th February 2004, being the day of the Finals & the awards nite.

The championship commenced with gusto in the banquet hall of the Grand Ashok. The name of the venue aptly suited the grand manner in which the championship was conducted, with the foreign delegates from SCAA (Speciality Coffee Association of America) participating and cheering the young baristi vying with each other for the

First position namely - Platinum Trophy, a rolling Trophy instituted by Coffee Board for the first time.

The venue was full of enthusiasts from all over, cheering and applauding every barista demonstrating and showcasing the skills.

Six finalists participated and four were chosen for four positions namely Platinum, Gold, Silver & Bronze.

They were tested for their ability to prepare and present Espresso, Cappuccino and signature drinks in 15 minutes time span. The following criteria for selection of the winner were as per the guidelines set by the world barista championship committee.
  1. Competition area
  2. Technical Skills
  3. Competition end
  4. Taste evaluation
  5. Beverage Presentation
All said and done, the best won and the rest were the winners too, as they participated with great spirit!

The gala presentation ceremony was grand with who-is-who of coffee industry participating and cheering the winners. There were planters, big and small, roasters, consumers, machinery manufacturers, broker, the other representatives of the industry and the media personnel.

Ms. Lakshmi Venkatachalam, Chairperson- Coffee Board and Chief Guest of the evening declared Mr. Sanjeev Kumar of Café Coffee Day - Bombay, as the Platinum Trophy winner, who will represent India in the world barista championship to be held in June 2004 in Trieste, Italy. We wish him all the best to bring laurels to the country!

Ms. Lakshmi Venkatachalam was making a remark that IBC is becoming bigger and better and assured all possible support. She also suggested that IBC has to be taken to many other centers in India for providing opportunities for many other baristi.

Mr. Tim O'Connor, Owner - Pacific Espresso, USA and Guest of Honour, during his speech congratulated Scai for the good work and remarked that he could observe sea of changes in quality and other aspects in Indian coffees when compared to the previous visit of his, years back. He was also appreciative of the efforts of Coffee Board in this regard.
